David Livingstone Smith and alum Ioana Panaitiu publish on simianization as dehumanization

David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, and co-author Ioana Panaitiu (Political Science, ’15) recently published a paper titled “Aping the human essence: simianization as dehumanization” in Volume 6 of the Racism Analysis Yearbook.

The paper discusses the presentation of racial minorities as apes. It focuses on the simianization of black people, though Smith and Panaitiu note that numerous racial and ethnic groups have been simianized, and many different groups have committed simianization of others.
