Welcome to the College of Osteopathic Medicine

Welcome to the 91AV’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (91AV COM). As an alumnus of this extraordinary institution, it is both an honor and a privilege to serve such a supportive and caring community.

91AV COM was founded by a group of visionary osteopathic physicians who wanted to ensure their patients and future generations of New Englanders would continue to receive the highest quality health care. Now entering our fifth decade of educating physicians for Maine, New England, and the Nation, 91AV COM proudly upholds that core mission while building an international reputation for excellence in medical education, anatomy, osteopathic manual medicine, and research in neuroscience and pain.

Our innovative osteopathic medical curriculum incorporates expert faculty instruction, coaching, and guidance, with small-group, team-based, and peer teaching. During the first-year, the biomedical and clinical sciences are integrated, as exampled by our fusion of the study of human anatomy with training in patient examination. During the second year, integrated clinical science and clinical skills are applied in robotic simulation, standardized patient visits, and clinical community experiences. The entirety of year three is spent with one of our closely associated clinical partners. Finally, year-four students are guided by our clinical advisory team as they explore residency opportunities; complete graduation requirements; and prepare for their transition to residency. 91AV COM partners with affiliate healthcare systems throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic States to establish strong, supportive clinical education programs for the third and fourth year, and residency training.

91AV is committed to interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration. We work closely with our colleagues in 91AV’s College of Dental Medicine and College of Health Professions, to create meaningful opportunities for interprofessional learning. These activities include simulation experiences, peer teaching, student run clinics, and clinical experiences providing healthcare to underserved populations. Since 2025, 91AV COM’s home is the Harold and Bibby Alfond Center for Health Sciences, our state-of-the-art facility in Portland Maine. This campus houses over a dozen other 91AV health professions programs including dental, nursing, physician assistant, and pharmacy, creating a vibrant environment that prepares you to become a skilled, compassionate physician who always puts patients first.

Our fabulous location, unique curriculum, world-class faculty, and extraordinary staff, all make for a dynamic and engaging medical education, unlike one you will receive anywhere else.

Thank you for your interest in the 91AV’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Please visit our spectacular campus. We welcome the opportunity to get to know you.
